At a time when imitations are widespread and genuinely fine lapis rough is becoming increasingly scarce, a complete necklace with an intense, even blue color, almost no visible white calcite, and only subtle traces of golden pyrite is increasingly difficult to find. Even describing a piece like this as “one in a hundred” may be optimistic.
Why This Quality Is So Rare
Lapis lazuli naturally tends to contain white calcite patches. Rough material with a rich, pure blue color may also contain fractures and cloudy inclusions. Producing cylindrical beads that are almost entirely free of visible white calcite requires precision cutting from large pieces of carefully selected rough.
By our selection standards, one kilogram of top-grade Afghan lapis rough may yield fewer than 30 grams of cylindrical beads suitable for this necklace. Every bead must also meet strict requirements for size, shape, curvature, color consistency, and surface polish.
The overall material loss can exceed 90%. In practical terms, producing enough suitable beads for ten lapis lazuli pearl necklace may require rough material that would ordinarily be sufficient for one hundred. The cost and difficulty are so high that many workshops have stopped producing necklaces of this quality altogether.
Simply put, genuinely fine material is in very limited supply.
